19 Cavendish Crescent North

This prominent house, built c 1882, is again in single household use after having previously been converted into flats. Front access is from Cavendish Crescent North with rear garden access from Clumber Crescent North. Architectural styling is typically eclectic for this period with revivalist trends including the prominent Tudor / Elizabethan half-timbered main gable on the garden elevation. Although a large extension has been added the external fabric of the original house remains predominantly intact and in fair condition with plain tile gabled roofs, decorative ridge tiles, raised gable walls with stone copings and red brick corbelled chimney stacks. Most of the original chimney pots have been removed. The red brick walls are plain with little ornamentation apart from stone dressings to doors and windows, including mullions and transoms. Most of the original stonework, which would have been left in its natural finish, has now been painted. Small areas of brickwork on the ground floor and the outbuilding have also been painted. Two window bays facing the garden, two storey brick and stone canted bay topped by a projecting half-timbered gable with large prominent bargeboards plus a single storey rectangular bay with a flat roof. Eaves are generally plain, slightly overhanging and a number of the original cast iron gutters and downpipes have been replaced with black plastic. The majority of the original casement and sash windows remain but there have been some replacements. An important feature of the house is the use of stained glass, particularly in the large stone mullioned and transomed landing window above the prominent entrance lobby. The brick and stone front and rear boundary walls have been repaired or sympathetically rebuilt although part of the front garden boundary wall was removed to accommodate a garage c1921 and this has been subsequently enlarged. The original brick and stone garden walls between no.19 and its neighbours (No.15 Cavendish Crescent North and No.6 North Road) remain.
