1 Western Terrace

Detached house c1895, for a time used as a school but now converted into flats. Building located on steeply sloping site. Three storeys plus attic storey. Red brick with ashlar dressings and gabled slate roof. Large extension added to south facing facade by architects Marsh & Grochowski, late 20c. Gabled storey added to original two storey flat roofed main entrance bay, late 20c. Also, single storey extension with lean-to slate roof built adjacent to main entrance bay. Large part of original garden area now developed into separate dwelling by architects Marsh & Grochowski c2000. Gabled main entrance bay adjacent to road with rectangular and canted window bays overlooking garden. Stonework features include complete surround to main entrance doorway with moulded label, label stops and decorative relief panel plus head and sill bands to bays and separate lintels and sills to a number of openings. Also, later stone copings and finial to entrance gable plus moulded mullion shaft to pair of round arched window openings above main entrance doorway. Stonework remains unpainted apart from mullion shaft. Decorative brickwork details include splayed voussoirs with hoodmoulds to round arched window heads, corbelled eaves and gable verges, string courses, brackets and ornamental banding. Steeply pitched slate roof with prominent gables on main facades. Ornamental ridge tiles and terracotta finials. Rebuilt red brick sidewall chimney stacks with plinth and string courses plus corbelled caps. Buff crown chimney pots. A number of roof windows added, particularly 2no. large windows to later pitched roof over main entrance bay. Combination of plain and glazing bar sash windows to original openings with a number of alterations or replacements. Surviving section of original red and blue brick boundary wall adjacent to main entrance bay, including square gate piers with moulded stone string courses and caps. Considerable difference in levels between main entrance on Western Terrace and surviving garden area. Coursed rubble stone retaining wall to garden boundary adjacent to Newcastle Drive.
