3 Western Terrace
One of a pair of houses c1845-50 possibly by architect T.C. Hine. Part of early group on Western Terrace, (formerly named Clinton Terrace). Now converted into flats. Plan by Caparne Baldry for flat conversion mid 20c. House plus attached railings and wall are Listed Grade II. Regency Classic style. Painted stucco facades with slate roof and 2no. coped side wall stacks. Three storeys plus basement and attics. Banded rustication to stucco on basement and ground floor on main front overlooking garden and to ground floor of set back side entrance bay. Garden front has first floor sill band, eaves cornice and blocking course with pairs of windows with moulded surrounds on each floor. Full height Ionic pilasters on garden front between sill band and eaves cornice. Plain road front facing Western Terrace with eaves cornice and pairs of windows on each floor. Part of blocking course removed on road front. Side bay has banded rustication to ground floor with panelled main entrance door and overlight in moulded stucco surround plus Italianate fenestration with round cornered, 2 light casements with wooden mullions, also in moulded surrounds. Side bay has 2no. sill bands, eaves cornice and blocking course. Lattice barrier added on top of blocking course for use of roof for amenity purposes by residents. 2no. windows on each of side bay facades with segment arched heads and moulded surrounds. Steel ladder and platforms added to side bay adjacent to main entrance doorway to provide fire escape from 2no. windows above. Windows mainly original glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds apart from road front which has plain reveals. Section of original railing, plinth boundary wall and piers to Western Terrace survives, other sections removed when part of original garden area was separately developed, late 20c, and now in residential use.
