3 Cavendish Crescent South

Detached house c1875, possibly by architects Hine & Son. Also known as Kirkstall Lodge. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled roof. Two storey, flat roofed, square side extension added (20c) adjacent to original flat roofed bay. Substantial part of original garden area adjacent to Holles Crescent developed for separate residential use c1970-80, with loss of original brick boundary wall and gateway enclosing lower garden area. Original single storey, hipped roof wing on road front plus adjacent side extension to house, now partly altered. Two storey, hipped roof rectangular window bay on road front with gable above. To left side, original flat roofed bay with prominent stone framed window. On garden front, two storey flat roofed canted and rectangular window bays topped by gable and gabled dormer. Corbelled, bull nose brick detail at eaves and gable verges with dentillation. Double red brick string course at mid height on some facades. Patterned brickwork to parapet of flat roofed side bay with band of buff bricks above and below square inset panels. Moulded brick panels and brick relief patterning to red brick chimney stacks. Segmental arched heads to a number of brickwork openings. Stonework features include shaped and moulded door and window surrounds, particularly pointed arch main entrance doorway, large mullioned and transomed windows on side facade plus bay windows and Venetian window on garden front. Also, separate stone lintels and sills, head and sill bands plus small decorative openings in gables and gable kneelers. Slate roof with clay ridge and hip tiles. Prominent gables on road and garden fronts plus gabled dormers. Original red brick side wall and ridge chimney stacks with buff crown pots. Some replacement pots. Later flat roofed dormer windows added at eaves level. Roof windows also added. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Originally, plain sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Now a number of alterations and replacements with new openings formed. Original red brick boundary wall on road front with blue brick plinth stretchers and saddleback copings. Original red brick gate piers with mouldings plus stone dressings and moulded stone caps.
