5 Cavendish Crescent South

One of a pair of houses (with No.7) c1875. Now converted into flats. Red brick with stone dressings and gabled plain tile roof. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Plans by Straw and Hall for additions for Robert Hutchinson c1910 and plan for alterations by Frank Broadhead for Robert Hutchinson 1935. Original carriage house and stable building at bottom of garden adjacent to Holles Crescent substantially altered, added to and converted into a number of garages. Later side extension and alterations to original extension and outbuildings on road front. Steel fire escape ladder and platforms from upper flats added under gable on side facade. Original windows, particularly on road front, replaced and flat roofed dormer windows added on all sides. Two storey canted window bay overlooking garden, with original hipped plain tile roof removed to create balcony amenity for attic flat. Brick band course at first floor level with dentillation detail plus corbelled brick course at attic level. Inset brickwork panels on garden front. Large areas of facing brickwork to ground floor storey now rendered and painted. Stone lintels and sills to original openings. A number of original windows altered including removal of stone lintels and sills. Surviving stone details now painted. Plain tile roof with overhanging eaves. Bargeboards and exposed tie member to gable on side facade with brick side wall chimney stack at central ridge position. Single gable with bargeboards overlooking garden above canted window bay. Red brick chimney stacks with string courses and corbelled caps. Original pots removed. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Character of house adversely affected by removal of original windows and alterations to original openings, particularly on road front. Brick boundary wall adjacent to Cavendish Crescent South substantially altered and rebuilt. Original outbuildings in former yard area adjacent to road front. Former conservatory/porch adjacent to entrance on side of house, now demolished.
