15 Cavendish Crescent South

Early detached house c1860, possibly by architect T.C. Hine. In single household use. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Red brick with ashlar dressings and gabled slate roof. Coach house/stable building late 19c, added in part of lower garden area with access from Lenton Road, now converted for separate residential use. Single storey, flat roofed bow window bay added to dining room by J.E. Walton for Arthur Brownsword c1934. Also, new entrance gate opening on main road front c1934. Alterations, additions and conversion of outbuildings into garage and flat by Evans, Cartwright & Woollatt architects for Wilford Dunn 1960. Also, early 21c alterations. Half glazed and panelled main entrance door with moulded stone surround, round arched head and side shafts. Main entrance doorway flanked by single fixed lights with round arched heads and moulded stone surrounds. Double gabled road front with plain bargeboards. Three single window openings at ground and first floor levels, including later window bay, plus single round arched window opening to each gable. Double gabled garden front with plain bargeboards. Central doorway flanked by single storey, flat roofed canted window bays. Three single window openings at first floor level with single round arched window to each gable. Later extensions and alterations obscure original ground floor openings on east facing facade. Round arched single original window at first floor level. Decorative buff brick banding with recessed square panels to facades at eaves and first floor level and to canted bay parapets. Brick plinths to canted bays now rendered and brick skin added to base of main entrance facade and road front. Stonework features include door and window surrounds, some with moulded hood and drip moulds, corniced head and plain sill bands to canted window bays plus plinths and copings. Slate roof with twin gables and bargeboards on road and garden fronts. Roof windows added. Red brick chimney stacks with altered copings. Original rainwater fittings replaced. Mainly original glazing bar sash windows generally. Stepped garden with paved terrace adjacent to house, now extended, and stone side steps leading down to lawn area enclosed by trees and shrubs. Altered brick boundary wall with decorative banding below copings. Small original outbuildings now replaced by garage and other additions.
