19 Cavendish Crescent South

Detached house c1858, possibly by architects Hine & Evans. One of first houses in The Park to be built away from periphery of estate. Also known as Amelia House. Early occupant of house was A.J.Mundella (1825-97), Liberal MP and prominent educationalist who served as cabinet minister in successive governments under W.E. Gladstone. House now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Red brick with ashlar dressings and gabled slate roof. Lower part of original terraced garden area adjacent to Fiennes Crescent replaced by development of four terraced townhouses c1970-80. Originally, side entrance on east facing facade through later conservatory. Single storey canted bay with hipped lead roof on west facing facade. Canted and rectangular window bays on garden front. Symmetrical triple gabled road front with combination of single, double and triple window openings with stone surrounds. Also doorway in central bay. Twin gabled garden front plus single gable to each side. Corbelled and splay brick detail at eaves and gable verges. Full ashlar surrounds to door and window openings with cusp detailing at a number of round and pointed arch heads. Also, splay detail to reveals. Stone details to parts of eaves and gable kneelers. Much of the stonework remains unpainted. Slate roof with prominent gables on all fronts plus gable dormers. Imposing red brick ridge and side wall chimney stacks with plinths, brick relief patterning, string courses and corbelled caps. Buff crown chimney pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Plain sash windows to original openings generally. Panelled doorway on road front with pointed arch glazed apertures. Small original outbuildings in forecourt area on road front now removed and red brick boundary wall with gated openings altered. Original brick and stone boundary wall with central gated opening adjacent to Fiennes Crescent replaced by later residential development.
