25 Cavendish Crescent South

Detached house c1876, possibly by architect Watson Fothergill. In single household use. House located on prominent corner plot adjacent to Cavendish Crescent South, Hardwick Road and Fiennes Crescent. Built for B. Cleaver, a Nottingham weaver and later occupied by Miss Ada Jessop of the Jessops department store family. Two storeys plus attic and basement. Red brick with stone dressings and hipped and gabled slate roof. Garages added, replacing part of boundary wall adjacent to Cavendish Crescent South. Single storey flat roofed, rectangular and pointed window bays on main garden front. To right, entrance facade with single storey square porch. Full height canted window bay on west facing facade plus projecting gabled wing and two storey canted bay on main road front. Profusion of decorative facade detailing including banded brick and stone round arched surround to main entrance doorway with tracery overlight and ogee arched stone hoodmould. Plain and moulded stone surrounds to door and window openings generally plus stone head and sill bands, string courses, hoodmoulds and copings. Decorative brickwork features include corbelled brackets to eaves with nailhead mouldings, projecting band course at first floor level and gables with sawtooth patterning, plus linear arrangement of inset eight pointed star shaped panels above window heads on bays to garden front. Blue brick banding generally. Slate hipped roof with gables. Clay ridge and hip tiles plus iron cresting to main roof. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Roof windows added. Red brick chimney stacks with string course and sawtooth detail at heads. Plain sash windows generally with some alterations and additions. Large timber framed stair window on road front with segmental head and leaded glazing. Double main entrance doors. Prominent brick boundary wall with nailhead mouldings and half round copings. Brick piers with stone caps to gated entrance on Cavendish Crescent South plus adjacent railings on brick plinth with stone copings. Garden area terraced to suit sloping site with garden gate opening to Fiennes Crescent.
