Bishop’s House: 27 Cavendish Road East

Detached house c1895, now residence of the Bishop of Nottingham. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Red brick with ashlar dressings and plain tile roof with gables and hips. Garage building added, probably by Frank Goulding Ltd c1937, replacing section of original boundary wall adjacent to Tattershall Drive. Single storey flat roofed extension in former yard area on main road front, c1965. Moulded stone surround with segment arched head to panelled double leaf main entrance door and overlight on south facing facade. Two storey polygonal window bay at left corner of garden front. To right, two storey rectangular window bay with part timber framed and bargeboarded gable above. On road front, projecting gabled wing to left, central 3 window bay with hipped roof attic storey above plus rectangular window bay to right with bargeboarded gable above. Blue brick bands and moulded brick string courses to all facades plus moulded brick reveals to a number of window openings. Stonework details include moulded surrounds to a number of door and window openings plus separate lintels and sills. Composite plain tile roof with gables, gablet, gable dormers plus hipped and conical roofs to bays. Moulded wood bargeboards to gables, gablet and gabled dormers. Decorative timber framing to upper part of gables. Decorative ridge tiles and terracotta finials. Red brick side wall chimney stacks with corbelled brick caps. Some original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Casement windows generally. Also, fixed lights and leaded lights. A number of alterations and additions to doors and windows. Original boundary wall, gate piers and gates adjacent to Cavendish Road East replaced by later flat roof extension and enlarged drive opening. Terraced garden area with coursed rubble stone retaining walls and railings. Original boundary wall adjacent to Tattershall Drive with coursed rubble stone plinth and partially rebuilt brickwork above.
