31 Cavendish Road East

Detached house c1899 for Mr Marsden, paper merchant. Also known as Castle Dene. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and gabled plain tile roof. Part of original lower garden area adjacent to Tattershall Drive developed as two separate dwellings c1970-80. Original glazed porch to main entrance removed and replaced with tiled and boarded pitched roof canopy plus extended brick pier. Possible single storey, glazed lean to extension on north facing facade removed and raised drive formed to create car access from Cavendish Road East. Drive extended c1985-86 into garden area with part of basement on garden front converted for garage use. Single storey gabled roof extensions on road front with main body of house behind. Gabled entrance front with two oriel windows at first floor level plus polygonal corner window bay with first floor timber framing topped by octagonal spire. Pair of two storey window bays on gabled garden front. Partly altered north facing facade with steel fire escape staircase and platforms. A number of brick and terracotta details including string and band courses, gable verges, decorative panels and circular vents. Stonework features include moulded door and window surrounds with tracery and shafts with floriated capitals. Also, moulded stone lintels, sills, sill bands and brackets. Stonework now painted. Complex roof form with a number of intersecting double pitched, plain tile roofs creating gables on elevations and at a number of levels. Ornamental clay ridge tiles. Octagonal spire with plain tiles and finial. Moulded brick details to gable verges generally except on garden front plus small hipped roof dormer with decorative brick panels above canted window bay. To right, gabled roof with projecting bargeboards plus tie and post. Red brick side wall chimney stacks with string courses, panels and altered caps. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Cross windows generally, also single casements, stone framed windows and leaded glazing. Some door and window alterations. Red brick boundary wall on road front rebuilt with railings added plus later and enlarged openings. Original garden walls to adjacent properties. Original terraced garden reshaped to accommodate drive with platform built above garage door entrance.
