Overdale: Cavendish Road East

One of a pair of houses c1890-95. Now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attics. Red brick with stone dressings and slate roof with gables and gabled dormers. Main entrance passageway and yard area adjacent to Cavendish Road East with terrace and garden facing Holles Crescent. Pair of window bays overlooking garden. Right hand bay canted with hipped roof at attic level and rectangular left hand bay with gabled dormer above. Stepped gabled wing on road front with single storey lean-to extension. Single storey pointed window bay adjacent to main entrance doorway. Decorative brick details to verges, eaves and string courses with corbelling, mouldings and dentillation. Brick semicircular arched heads to a number of window openings, particularly at attic level. Blue brick damp courses. Stone surrounds with chamfered reveals to majority of window openings on side and garden facing facades. Elsewhere, separate stone lintels and sills. Prominent, moulded stone surround to main entrance doorway with pointed arch head, mullioned overlights, shafts with floriated capitals and steps. Gabled roof with slates (partly re-roofed) and ornamental clay ridge tiles and finials. Prominent gables on all frontages plus gabled dormers. Lead hips to canted bay roof. Red brick chimney stacks with brick relief patterning, corbelled caps and crown pots. Some pots replaced. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added. Roof windows added plus flat roofed dormer window. Sash windows generally, some with glazing bars. Panelled main entrance door and service doors. Glazed door added to canted bay, replacing sash window and part of brick and stone plinth. Paved garden terrace with brick retaining wall plus railings and steps down to main garden area. Original boundary wall to Holles Crescent with coursed rubble stone plinth as retaining wall and red brick garden wall above. Original steps from garden to gated opening on Holles Crescent with stone piers and original panelled door/gate with decorative grille. Red brick boundary wall to Cavendish Road East with gated opening and piers to main entrance passageway at the side. Original gated opening with piers to yard now enlarged to provide car access.
