1 Clare Valley

Semi-detached house, c1890, forming part of a group of five houses facing southern end of the ‘Bowl’ recreational area. Three storeys including attic plus cellars. In single household use. Red brick facades with brick plinth plus string courses at window head and sill heights. String courses form half round and segmental arches on pair of windows and door on garden front with decorative brick and terracotta infill patterning. Original single storey extension abuts road facing facade. Two storey brick canted window bay facing garden with stone window surrounds. Stone sills and chamfered lintels to openings generally. Inset brick panels to window bay with corbelled brick eaves to hipped bay roof. Open, moulded timber framed porch with hipped plain tile roof to main entrance doorway. Part of original porch framework has been altered. Brick garage building added at bottom of garden facing Huntingdon Drive forming breach in original brick boundary wall. Hipped plain tile roof with half-timbered gable over bay on rear facade. Dormer windows on front and back with plain tile hipped roofs and side tile hanging. Clay ridge tiles and bonnet hip tiles. Plain tile roof coverings have recently been renewed. Projecting timber eaves with replaced gutters and downpipes. Red brick chimney stacks with corbelled and projecting brick details. Central stack has added vertical brick relief patterning. A number of original pots are missing or have been replaced. Original sash windows, a number with glazing bars. Some minor alterations. Original casement windows to dormers and gable window plus side windows to entrance hall and first floor landing, possibly fitted originally with stained glass panels. Original brick boundary walls with plinth, piers and concrete copings adjacent to Clare Valley and Huntingdon Drive. Original brick gate piers with stone caps. Original brick and stone retaining wall to terrace and steps leading to lower garden area. The house remains substantially intact with few significant external alterations.
