3 Clare Valley
Detached house at centre of a row of five houses, probably by same builder c1890, facing southern end of the ‘Bowl’ recreational area. House is flanked by pair of matching semi-detached houses. Three storeys including attic plus cellars. In single household use. Pair of pitched roof single storey garages now replace original small extension / outbuildings and part of brick boundary wall enclosing former yard area. Predominantly red brick facades with extensive half-timbered styling to first floor and projecting gable bay facing the garden. Single flat roofed box window bay at ground floor level on garden facade. Stone sills and chamfered lintels to openings generally with brick segmental arched head over door opening to garden. Hipped plain tile roof with bonnet hip tiles and clay ridge tiles. A number of ridge tiles appear to have been replaced with flashings. Dormer windows to front, back and both sides of house with hipped plain tile roofs and side tile hanging. Projecting timber eaves with replaced gutters and downpipes. Red brick chimney stacks with corbelled and projecting brick details. A number of original chimney pots have been replaced. Combination of original casement and sash windows with variety of glazing bar arrangements. Original brick and stone retaining wall to terrace and steps leading to lower garden area. Apart from alteration works as part of later garage additions, the house remains substantially intact with few other significant external changes.
