Grove House: Clare Valley

One of four detached houses c1905-1916 at cul-de-sac end of Clare Valley overlooking tennis and bowls clubs. This part of Clare Valley originally named Huntingdon Drive. Plans for Grove House prepared in 1913 possibly by architects Jeffries and North for Frank Hodson (Senior). In single household use. Two storeys with large, storey high brick plinth facing the garden. Detached garage building, with pitched roof, possibly added within a few years of original house. House at base of steep bank forming edge of the ‘Bowl’ and eastern boundary of The Park. Large front garden at lower level and shared drive with ‘The Spinney’. Style influenced by latter part of Arts and Crafts movement. Combination of painted render and brick facades. Single storey canted bays, with flat lead covered roofs, to front and south facing facades. Prominent chimney stack on garden facing facade with twin decorative window openings forming part of wider plinth at ground level. Plain detailing to facades generally with decorative brick segmental arches over main first floor windows plus brick heads and sills to other openings. Gabled and hipped roof with clay plain tiles, ridge tiles and bonnet hip tiles. Wooden eaves and bargeboards. Red brick chimney stacks with pattern detail at head plus stone caps. Variety of chimney pots. Predominantly wood casement windows, mainly fitted with lead / lattice panes. Single oculus window on front facade at first floor level. Retractable sun blind fitted above window head adjacent to main entrance door. Panelled main entrance door, half glazed with lead / lattice panes, plus semicircular arched fanlight frame and flat projecting canopy on shaped wooden bracket. Extensive groundworks with original stone retaining walls to lower front garden area. Steeply banked rear garden with retaining wall at base adjacent to the house.
