The Spinney: Clare Valley

One of four detached houses built c1905-1916 at cul-de-sac end of Clare Valley overlooking tennis and bowls clubs. This part of Clare Valley originally named Huntingdon Drive. Plans for The Spinney were prepared in 1915, possibly by architects Jeffries and North for a Mr Thomson (owner or builder). In single household use. Style influenced by latter part of Arts and Crafts movement. Two storey house at bottom of steep bank forming edge of the ‘Bowl’ and eastern boundary of The Park. No significant alterations apart from addition of small lean-to coal shed c1940 and re-planning of part of rear ground floor to include area, originally used as toilet with external access, as part of house. Single storey garage building, with hipped plain tile roof and rendered walls and brick plinth, built in front garden area adjacent to access road c2000. Combination of rendered and brick facades. Veranda area with rendered columns adjacent to main entrance doorway. Plain detailing to openings on brick facades with decorative brick lintels and projecting brick sills. Two storey rendered box window bay on front facade with lead covered flat roof. Single storey flat lead roofed bow window bay with brick plinth on south facing facade. Large flat roofed dormer window above veranda area. Retractable sunblind to part of veranda area. Hipped section of roof facing the garden with pair of gables at rear. Clay plain tiles with clay ridge tiles and bonnet hip tiles. Combination of projecting wooden eaves and flush verges. Red brick chimney stacks with stepped heads and stone caps. Variety of chimney pots with some missing and later replacements. Predominantly wood casement windows, many with lead / lattice panes. A number of window alterations and replacements. Half glazed main entrance door and screen with lead / lattice glazing. Extensive groundworks with original stone terrace and steps adjacent to house, retaining walls to lower front garden area and stone gate piers and boundary wall to Clare Valley. Steeply banked rear garden area with access steps and retaining wall at base adjacent to the house.
