5 Clumber Crescent South

Detached house c1881. Part of house converted into separate flat. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled slate roof. Flat roofed garage building added c1931 between original outbuildings and road front boundary. Also, single storey flat roofed later extension to right of entrance porch. Main entrance door with round arched head in gabled brick front to porch with glazed pitched roof. Part gabled road front with gabled dormers. Pair of central, single doorways on garden front with brick and stone steps, flanked by two storey canted and square window bays. Side entrance door with stone steps and two storey canted window bay on west facing facade. Variety of brick/terracotta detailing including moulded cornice band at first floor level on all facades with pediments and floral festoon panels over a number of window openings. Similar moulded details at eaves and to some gables forming pediments. Also, moulded reveals to attic windows and oculus on road front plus eight pointed star gable vents, dentillation at gable verges and string courses generally. Stonework features include moulded surrounds to ground and first floor window openings, separate lintels and sills plus plinths and copings. Some areas of brickwork and stonework now rendered and painted. Slate hipped main roof with gables and gable dormers. Hipped roof to canted window bay on garden front. Prominent red brick side wall chimney stacks with brick relief patterning, corbelled caps and crown chimney pots. Cast iron rainwater fittings with added pipework. Mainly casements with a number of cross windows. Also, plain sash windows. Large pair of timber framed windows to staircase hall on west facing facade with round arched heads and leaded lights. Panelled porch entrance door with half glazed panelled side door. A number of alterations and additions to doors and windows. Original garden area remains intact with paved terrace adjacent to house and stone side steps to lower lawn area enclosed by trees and shrubs. Large coursed rubble stone retaining wall and gate to boundary with Cavendish Crescent South plus red brick garden wall with saddleback copings above. Original red brick boundary wall on main road front with plinth and saddleback copings. Square gate piers, red brick with panels and string course plus moulded stone caps. Gabled brick porch front flanked by ornamental stone brackets. Part of wall replaced by later garage.
