7 Clumber Crescent South

Detached house c1890, now converted into flats. Two storeys plus basement and attic storeys. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roof. Original outbuildings adjacent to Cavendish Crescent South converted and extended for separate residential use c1970-80. Character and appearance of original house adversely affected by later external alterations and additions, including single and two storey flat roofed extensions possibly by Child and Sherwin for Hugo Likiernik c1934, plus rebuilding of boundary wall adjacent to Clumber Crescent South. Steel fire escape staircases also added. Single storey flat roofed later extension on road front. Above at eaves level, decorative brick panel with pediment and to right, prominent Flemish gabled dormer window. Two storey canted window bay and pedimented entrance bay on east facade with oriel window facing west. Three storey canted and rectangular window bays on garden front with shaped gabled dormer windows above. Prominent tower with hipped roof between gabled dormers at attic storey level. Canted bay to basement at centre of garden front with conservatory above. Originally, stepped access into house from both sides, now partly altered. Rich variety of brick/terracotta detail including moulded cornice band at first floor level, corniced eaves with modillion brackets plus plinths, string courses, pediments, moulded reveals to openings, dentils and decorative panels. Stonework features include moulded surrounds to door and window openings, head and sill bands, separate lintels and sills plus copings and brackets. Some areas of brickwork and stonework now rendered or painted. Hipped slate roof with crested clay ridge tiles. Flat roofed dormer window and other roof windows added. Red brick side wall chimney stacks with brick relief patterning, panels and corbelled caps. Some stacks altered or partly removed. Original rainwater fitting removed and further pipework added. Variety of window sizes, openings and groupings with square and round arched heads. Sash and later casement windows generally, many with leaded lights. A number of door and window alterations and additions. Substantial part of original terraced garden area altered and converted for car use with access drives and grouped garages.
