Edale House : Clumber Road East
Large detached house c1890, possibly by architects Hine & Son. Now converted into flats. Red brick with stone dressings and hipped and gabled roofs. Two and three storeys plus basement and attics. Possible late 19c and early 20c additions include large two and three storey red brick extensions with hipped and gable roofs abutting north front of original house plus single storey flat roofed red brick wing with stone balustrading on garden front, replacing original glasshouse/ conservatory. 20c garage extension. Porch entrance doorway on road front boundary with panelled door, moulded stone surround, round arched head and twin side shafts with floriated capitals. Brick and stone open pediment above. Original glazed porch now replaced. Plain sash windows on road front with moulded brick surrounds and stone sills. Moulded brick string courses and cornice band with moulded brick dentillation to eaves and gable verges. Prominent red brick chimney stack on road front gable with shaped flues, inset panels, patterning, string courses and corbelled cap. Flemish gable to central bay on garden front with brick festoon relief ornamentation and stone dressings. 3no. plain sash windows at ground floor level on central bay with moulded brick surrounds, festoon reliefs and pediment above central window opening. Pair of windows above with moulded brick surrounds, stone central and side shafts with floriated capitals and brick segmental pediment. Plain sashes either side of central bay with later glazed porch addition. To the left, large flat roofed, single storey later extension with stone balustrading. Alterations to openings at first floor level above extension roof. Above again, tall moulded, shaped and patterned brick side wall chimney stack. To the right, on garden front, large two storey extension. Pair of canted window bays on south facade. Flat roof bay, possibly later addition. Octagonal spire roof to right hand bay with plain sash windows, moulded brick surrounds, festoon reliefs and pediments. Large stone mullioned window with leaded lights on north facade with moulded brick open pedimented gable above and central decorative circular terracotta vent. Plain tiled roofs with bonnet hip tiles, ornamental ridge tiles and finials. Original brick and stone boundary walls and gate piers. Later gates.
