Penryhn House : Clumber Road East

Detached house 1879 by architect T.C.Hine. Now converted into two flats. Two storeys plus basement and attic. Red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roof. Stables and substantial part of original garden now converted and developed for separate residential accommodation. Other 20c alterations and additions include flat roofed first floor extension to north wing and substantial bow fronted conservatory to main garden front. Flat roofed garage building also added behind boundary wall at junction of Clumber Road East and Tunnel Road. Moulded stone surround to doorway on main entrance front, continued around plain sash window opening to first floor with stone and brick open pediments above. Pair of panelled doors to main entrance. Plain sash windows on entrance front, all with moulded stone surrounds. Stone cornice band at first floor level. Pair of two storey canted window bays on main garden front, flanking garden doorway and later bow fronted conservatory. Central canted window bay at first floor level above conservatory. Plain sash windows with moulded stone window surrounds, sill bands and cornices to bays. Comparatively plain east front with variety of openings including plain sashes with moulded stone surrounds to original window openings. One of 2no. original door openings with moulded stone surrounds on east front altered to form window opening plus first floor window added. Central bay on north front with prominent stone mullioned window with leaded lights at first floor level and above, shaped gabled dormer at attic level flanked by hipped roofs. Original single storey side entrance wing on north front now altered with first floor extension and new windows added. Slate hipped roof with clay ridge and hip tiles plus finials. Painted eaves cornice. Lead flashings to hips on canted window bays. Red brick ridge and side wall chimney stacks, originally with stone dressings. Now some alterations. Prominent boundary walls on Clumber Road East and Tunnel Road with random coursed rubble stone plinths, red brick walls and blue brick detailing. Square, red brick gate piers with coursed rubble stone plinths and moulded stone caps.
