Westwood: Clumber Road East

Detached house c1900-1905. Previously named ‘Cuylerholme’. Two storeys plus basement and attic storeys. Red brick with hipped and gabled plain tile roof. Arts and Crafts style. Part of house converted into separate flat. Plan for garage by Swann and Wright for William Warner c1920-25. Only comparatively small part of original garden area now survives following residential development c1975 to right of original house and across lower part of garden adjacent to Cavendish Road East. Round arched brick opening to recessed main entrance porch on road front with flat roof and parapet at first floor level above. Also, similar round arched recess at basement level on garden front. To right of main entrance porch, single storey flat roofed bow window bay with canted oriel window above. To left of porch, twin gabled wing, single storey outbuilding with lean-to roof plus later garage building. Half-hipped gable to south facade, flanked by prominent chimney stacks, plus single storey rectangular bay with hipped roof. Gabled north facing facade with late 20c steel spiral fire escape staircase serving upper floors. Pair of two storey canted window bays with hipped plain tile roofs on symmetrical garden front flanking central terrace/balcony, now infilled, plus tile hanging above. Some areas of brickwork have been rendered and painted. Segmental and semicircular arched heads to a number of window openings with decorative blue brick band patterns in some areas. Steeply pitched plain tile roof with hips, half-hip and gables. Tile hanging to gables. Overhanging eaves generally. Red brick side wall and ridge chimney stacks with decorative banding and moulded copings. Ridge stacks altered and rendered. Mainly glazing bar casements with some alterations. Panelled and partly glazed main entrance door flanked by narrow single sidelights. Original coursed rubble stone boundary wall and gate piers on road front. Parts of original wall replaced by later garage building and adjacent residential development.
