159 - 161 Derby Road

Originally, terrace of six houses forming part of group of buildings adjacent to Derby Road known as Rock Terrace c1860. Now combination of shops and residential. Prominently positioned at junction of Barrack Lane and Derby Road. Plot backs onto Barrack Lane, previously named Barrack Road. Barrack Road formed main access to Army Barracks in The Park from Derby Road. Built c1793 and demolished c1870 the Barracks were replaced by new estate roads Pelham Crescent and Cavendish Crescent North. Three storeys with two storeys above ground level on Barrack Lane and three storeys facing Derby Road. Red brick with double pitched slate roof. Imposing four storey circular tower with flat roof, (previously domed?), at one end of wedge shaped building completely infilling plot between Barrack Lane and Derby Road. Tower may have been an early addition to terrace. Shop premises at ground floor on Derby Road front. Above at first floor level, row of 6no. replaced glazing bar sash type windows, repeated at second floor level with variation in size. Moulded eaves cornice above. Brick plinth to tower now rendered and painted. Single window opening to first and second floors of tower with three windows at third floor level. Original sash windows to tower replaced with plastic replicas similar to other windows generally. Irregular arrangement of doors and windows facing Barrack Lane. Original windows replaced and new openings added. Brickwork details include segmental and flat arched heads to window openings, splay brick sills and first floor storey height string course on Derby Road front. Splay brick corbelled head to tower. Variety of timber framed shop fronts at ground floor level on Derby Road. Slate roof, wedge shaped in plan formed by 2no. double pitched roofs with hips to roof adjacent to Derby Road and gable end to section of roof adjacent to Barrack Lane. No eaves cornice on Barrack Lane front. Clay ridge and hip tiles. 3no. red brick chimney stacks with string courses, corbelled caps and buff fireclay pots. Original rainwater fittings replaced and further pipework added.
